Background

The Wilkin family has farmed at Tiptree for nearly three hundred years, growing traditional English fruits such as strawberries, loganberries, quinces and plums. The very first Tiptree conserves were made in 1885 and over the years the product range has grown to include preserves, marmalades, jellies, honey, chutneys and relishes. Tiptree is found all over the world and served in many hotels, on top airlines and luxury cruise ships.

The company recognises that all its activities have an impact on the environment and is therefore committed to a programme of continual improvement in environmental performance, prevention of pollution and compliance with environmental legislation.

Service

Through its Tankered Waste Services Alpheus supported Wilkin & Sons with the disposal of liquid waste from their jam making process for nearly twenty years. In response to its commitment to minimise the company’s impact on the environment, Wilkin & Sons charged Alpheus with finding the most sustainable environmental option for their liquid waste disposal. Whilst Alpheus is licensed to receive and treat liquid waste, in this instance the waste was brokered on behalf of Wilkin & Sons and recycled to land with huge benefits to agriculture.

Implementation

In brokering the waste Alpheus ensured full compliance with regulatory requirements on behalf of Wilkin & Sons, from checking European Waste Catalogue (EWC) codes and maintaining hazardous waste premises codes to ensuring Duty of Care regulations were met and obtaining agronomist reports to demonstrate beneficial reuse of the waste. As part of this service Alpheus also carried out audits and inspections throughout the recycling chain.

Through the management of the whole disposal process Alpheus were able to support Wilkin & Sons for many years in their commitment to continually improve their environmental performance whilst maintaining a world-class brand.
